MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Mercyhurst softball team kicked off their 2011 season splitting a double header against Mount Olive College. In their first game of the season the Lakers were dropped 13-6. In the second game Hurst' picked up on offense and out scored the Trojans, 7-2.
In game one, the Lakers gave up 16 hits and committed one error. Junior Kristie Janoske went four and two thirds innings in a losing effort. Freshman
Courtney Smith went 2-2 with a single and a three-run homer. Senior
Michelle Schmitz went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
The Lakers shook the cob webs off in the second game of a two game set. Senior
Amanda Norman pitched five innings and only gave up four hits. Sophomore
Megan Hopton and freshman
Megan Smith both came in for one inning relief while giving up only one hit each. Mercyhurst totaled 10 hits highlighted by junior
Samantha Eimers and her two-run bomb. Junior
Jen Bower also had two hits going 2-4 in the game.
Mercyhurst is set for tomorrow's (Feb.13) game as they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. to take on Chowan University.
