ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team closed its season Saturday with a 5-0 loss at Gannon. Gannon scored twice in the first half and netted three in the second to overpower the Lakers.
The Lakers end their season with a 7-10-1 overall record and a 4-9-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showing. Gannon now is 9-4-4 overall and holds a 6-4-4 PSAC record. The win for Gannon moves them into the seventh seed for the PSAC playoffs.
The Golden Knights tallied their first goal of the contest at the 9:09 minute mark. Mercyhurst's defense withstood the relentless Golden Knight attack until the 43:30 mark when Gannon found the net for the second time.
At half, Gannon held a 4-0 corner kick advantage and an 11-2 advantage in shots.
Six minutes into the second half Gannon tallied its third goal of the match after a scramble in front of the net. Amanda Sharbaugh, the Golden Knights all-time goals leader, added to her total later in the half by netting the fourth and fifth goals for Gannon.
All told, Gannon took seven corners to none for Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst took five shots compared to Gannon's 23. Graduate Student
Rachel Griepsma made seven saves in the losing effort while her counterpart, Maggie Brinkman, stopped two in the win.
Griepsma concluded the season with an overall record of 7-10-1. Brinkman heads into the PSAC playoffs with a 9-4-4 record this season.
