Lakers Snap Skid, Down Slippery Rock, 2-1

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College field hockey team snapped its five game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Slippery Rock Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match-up in Slippery Rock, Pa. With the win, the Lakers improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Senior Sara Wowkowych and sophomore Tesa Ramsdell both scored for the Lakers, who now have defeated Slippery Rock in 12 straight meetings.

Despite getting outshot 26-9, including 14-3 in the first half, the Lakers made the most of their opportunities in dealing The Rock its sixth loss of the season. Mercyhurst found the back of the cage once in each half and relied on the goalkeeper play of junior Ashley Wiskup, who turned aside six shots on goal for her second win of the season.

Wowkowych, entering the game with four career goals against Slippery Rock, continued her dominance over the green and white when she took a pass from junior Katie Erbacher and put it past netminder Lisa Belcastro with 19:47 showing on the clock.

Ramsdell then extended the lead to 2-0 later in the second half, scoring on an unassisted play with less than nine minutes to play at 61:14.

Slippery Rock would eventually answer the back-to-back scores with one of its own, as Katie Krouse, the only SRU play to score on Mercyhurst in the last eight years, pocketed her second goal of the season thanks to some help from Allie Hartman at the 63-minute mark. Mercyhurst has now allowed just two goals to SRU since the 2002 season.

The Lakers continue PSAC Western Division play this weekend when they host Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Tullio Field. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
