Lakers Squeak by Shippensburg, 1-0

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team defeated the Shippensburg Lady Raiders, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Mercyhurst Soccer Field.

Junior Paige McDowell scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to help the Lakers record their fifth victory of the season (5-1-0, 2-1-0 PSAC) and fourth shutout of an opponent.

McDowell provided the game's only goal when she stole the ball away from a Shippensburg defender at the top of the box and sent a low shot to the far post with less than 10 minutes elapsed.

With the lead intact, Mercyhurst kept the Lady Raider sat bay thanks to a stingy defense and the goalkeeping play of junior Rachel Griepsma, who stopped nine shots to move her record to 5-1-0 on the season. Mercyhurst outshot Shippensburg 18-16 and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lakers will look to make it three in a row when they face No. 20 California (Pa.) in a PSAC contest Saturday, Sept. 18, on the road. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
