KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In front of 3,117 fans at University Field, Kutztown's Josh Smith and Kendall Coleman combined for five touchdowns to lead the Golden Bears to a 35-14 victory over Mercyhurst College in the teams' first-ever meeting on Saturday night.

Mercyhurst (1-1) limited the Golden Bears (2-0) to 58 yards rushing, but Kutztown was able to amass 422 yards of total offense behind quarterback Kevin Morton, who completed 25-of-35 passes for 364 yards despite throwing five interceptions.

The Lakers' Brandon Harper was responsible for three of those picks, tying the Mercyhurst single-game record shared by Steve Hill (vs. Ferris State, 2000) and Rob Keefe (vs. Indianapolis, 2003).

The Golden Bears opened the scoring as Coleman returned a punt 74 yards in the first quarter before Smith added a 37-yard touchdown reception in the second to give Kutztown a 14-0 lead.

The Lakers (1-1) Gerald Anderson cut the Mercyhurst deficit in half with a 70-yard run in the final five minutes of the opening stanza, but KU's Smith would counter with a 4-yard strike from Morton with just under a minute remaining to give Kutztown a 21-7 advantage at the half.

Anderson's 70-yard touchdown run marks the fifth-longest in Lakers' history and just the second touchdown run of that distance or longer since the 1985 season.

In the third quarter, Coleman added his second score for the Golden Bears with 4:46 remaining before Mercyhurst's Trevor Kennedy added a 6-yard touchdown reception from Garrett Kensy for the Lakers' final score.

The 12-play, 61-yard scoring drive began with a 25-yard kickoff return by Andrew Bailey. Facing a 3rd-and-11, Kensy fired a strike to Matt Mohr for a 15-yard completion to move the chains and keep the drive alive. A five-yard run by Anderson before a seven-yard completion to Kennedy put the Lakers on the Golden Bears' 35-yardline. Facing another 3rd-and-long, Kensy connected with Terrance Coon for a 17-yard bomb that spotted the ball at the Kutztown 18-yardline. Kensy rushed for six, then threw for eight yards to Anderson and six to Kennedy to close out the drive.

Kensy finished with 158 yards on 17 completions in 34 attempts, hitting Kennedy for a team-high five receptions.

Kutztown's Smith, who finished the game with six catches and 109 yards, recorded his final touchdown pass of the day in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Tim Herbener led all tacklers with 13, while Kutztown's Jason Ulmer and Joel Irwin each recorded 10 tackles. The Lakers' Bryan Boyce added eight stops, including two for loss while intercepting a pass. Harper, who tied the single-game interception record, finished with four tackles.

Next up for the Lakers is an away game against C.W. Post on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
