Lakers Fall to Kutztown, 1-0, in PSAC Opener

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon, falling to Kutztown, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest in Kutztown, Pa. The Lakers fall to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Stephanie Borland lifted the Golden Bears to their third victory of the season and kept their unblemished record intact when she netted the game-winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest.

With time winding down on the pair of unbeatens, freshman Lily Taylor took a stab at breaking the tie with a hard shot straight at junior netminder Rachel Griepsma. Griespma made the initial save but lost control of the ball as it rolled to an open Borland, who knocked it to the far post with 83:09 showing on the clock.

In a game that saw both teams trade chances, Mercyhurst looked to be the favorite in the first half holding a 3-2 advantage in shots. Kutztown, however, upped the pressure in the second to take a 10-6 edge.

Junior Molly Marsh attempted three of the team's six chances in the game, placing two of them on net.

Kutztown's Alyssa Hacklberg recorded the win with five saves in goal. Griepsma saw her record slip to 3-1 with six saves.

Mercyhurst looks to bounce back when the Lakers take on Mansfield on Saturday, Sept. 11, in Mansfield, Pa. Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
