EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College softball team competed in two pitching duels Saturday, April 10 at East Stroudsburg, winning game one 1-0 before dropping the second game by the same score, 1-0.

With Saturday's split doubleheader, the Lakers now hold an 18-18 record. The Warriors record now stands at 17-22.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Kristi Janoske fashioned a two-hitter for her ninth win and third shutout of the season. She struck out two batters and did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. ESU's Jackie Battaglino allowed one run on six hits.

The Lakers took advantage of a two-hit inning in the top of the fourth inning, pushing across the game's only run. Jen Bower singled with one out, and a Megan Houston single moved pinch runner Molly McNamara to third base. With two outs, Houston got caught in a rundown. McNamara scored a run before Houston got tagged out, giving Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors threatened in the fifth with back-to-back singles, but both runners were stranded, and Mercyhurst held its 1-0 lead throughout the rest of the game.

Bower, Houston, and Kara Gorgos each posted 2-for-3 performances. McNamara scored the game's only run.

Game two opened with two and a half scoreless innings. East Stroudsburg scored a run during the bottom of the third, as Alicea Ashe scored on a bunt single for a 1-0 Warrior lead. The Lakers registered two hits over the remainder of the contest, but were unable to generate any runs, falling 1-0.

Amanda Norman allowed one run on five hits in four and one-thirds innings, leaving her record at 7-7. Janoske pitched one and two-thirds hitless innings in relief. Battaglino (10-12) finished off her second complete game of the day with a four-hit shutout.

Gorgos, Amber Rapose, Emily Redig and Amanda Walker each recorded hits for the Lakers in the nightcap, including a double from Rapose.

The Lakers will next play at cross town rival Gannon Sunday, April 11, with the twinbill starting at 2 p.m.
