Lakers Sweep Ave Maria to Conclude Spring Break Trip

AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Mercyhurst College softball team swept both games of a double-header at Ave Maria Monday, March 1. The Lakers downed the Gyrenes 21-0 and 4-1. 

With the two wins, the Lakers are now 5-8 on the season, while the Gyrenes fell to 5-11.

For the double-header, Michelle Schmitz went 7-for-7 with a double and a triple. Jen Bower went 3-for-9 from the plate also with a double and a triple.

Mercyhurst scored six runs in the first and fifth innings, scoring 21 total runs in the first game. The Lakers then went on to score only four total runs in the second game of the day. 

Kristi Janoske and Syndey Cuscino combined on the mound for the first win. Janoske allowed just one hit with a walk and a strikeout in one inning pitched, while Cuscino allowed four hits with two walks and two strikeouts on the day. 

Amanda Norman and Megan Hopton pitched the second game of the double header for the Lakers. Norman had 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings pitched, while Hopton allowed two hits and an earned run in two innings. 

For the Gyrenes, Angela Mullally and Janet Holtfreter each suffered a loss. Mullally pitched five innings and surrendered 21 hits and had only one strikeout in the first game. Holtfreter registered three strikeouts and gave up eight hits while pitching all seven innings of the second game. 

The Lakers scored three runs in the third inning to kick off the scoring and finished with another run in the fifth. The Gyrenes scored their lone run of the day in the bottom of the sixth. 

The Lakers had a total of 22 RBI on the day, Schmitz and Bower with five apiece; Julie Harmon with four, Emily Redig, Kristen Fyffe, and Anna Glomb with two each, and Amanda Walker and Amber Rapose tallying one apiece. 

The Lakers concluded their Spring Break trip in Fla. with the wins over Ave Maria. The Lakers return to action on Saturday, March 6 at the Glenville State Tournament. They will face Glenville state at 1 p.m. and West Virginia State at 3 p.m.
