MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Mercyhurst College women's hockey team saw its season come to an end as Cornell's Catherine White scored the game-winner 13:14 into overtime, lifting Big Red to a stunning 3-2 victory over the top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Lakers at the 2010 NCAA Women's Frozen Four Friday evening at Ridder Arena.
Mercyhurst finishes the year with a 30-3-3 record, while Cornell improves to 21-8-6 and advances to the NCAA Women's Frozen Four title game on Sunday.
White dealt the final blow when she found the puck in the middle of several players crashing the net and knocked it past sophomore Hillary Pattenden to deal the Lakers their fourth NCAA overtime loss in program history.
Pattenden finished the game with 27 saves, 12 of which came in the first period as Big Red outshot the Lakers 13-7 and built a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Laura Fortino.
Fortino netted her 13th goal of the season when she buried a rebound on a shot by Karlee Overgaurd at the 6:30 mark. It was the third man-down goal surrendered by the Lakers this season.
Cornell would hold the lead for nearly 23 minutes until junior Kylie Rossler scored the first of two Laker goals within a one minute and 55 second span.
Rossler evened the game at 8:43 as her shot from the left circle ricocheted off of a couple of Cornell players before finding its way into the back of the net. Sophomore Meghan Corbett then gave the Lakers the lead, at 2-1, when she buried a pass from Rossler at the corner boards at 10:38.
Despite the quick goals, Mercyhurst would see its lead disappear in the third period, as Overguard tied the game at 2-2 with 12:54 remaining in regulation.
Both teams tied in shots with 30 apiece and went scoreless on the power play, with Mercyhurst going 0-for-5 and Cornell finishing 0-for-6.
