Miami Shores, Fla. – The Mercyhurst college softball team earned a split of two games at Barry University Thursday, Feb. 25, taking the first contest, 6-3 before falling 8-5 in the second game.
The Lakers are now 2-5 following the split of Thursday's double-header, while Barry holds an 11-3 record.
Kristi Janoske picked up her first win of the 2010 season, giving up three runs, two earned on six hits while going the distance in game one.
Emily Redig batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while
Anna Glomb added two hits and one run scored.
Michelle Schmitz registered two RBI, and
Elizabeth Maier scored two runs.
Game one began with the Lakers scoring single runs in each of the first two innings. Barry answered with a pair in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
Mercyhurst scored two runs in the fifth inning, as
Amber Rapose scored on a wild pitch and Glomb stole home. The Lakers tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth, with Schmitz belting a two-run double for a 6-2 advantage. The Buccaneers scored just one run in the bottom of the seventh, falling short, 6-3.
In the second game, Mercyhurst was held to one run on four hits over the first six innings, falling behind, 8-1. The Lakers rallied in the top of the seventh inning, as the first two batters reached.
With two outs and runners on first and second,
Julie Harmon singled to load the bases.
Kara Gorgos and
Amanda Walker both drew bases-loaded walks, and Mercyhurst trailed 8-3.
Andrea Sauers then drove in a pair with a single, making it 8-5. The Buccaneers struck out the next Laker batter to end the game.
Mercyhurst recorded five runs on eight hits in game two.
Jen Bower went 2-for-2, while Sauers posted two RBI.
Amanda Norman allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in five innings, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The Lakers next play at Northwood Friday, Feb. 26 in West Palm Beach, Fla. The double-header begins at 2 p.m.
