TIFFIN, Ohio – Four Tiffin University starters scored in double-figures as the host Dragons downed Mercyhurst College by a 90-69 count in the final game of the Tiffin University Dragon Classic.
Jessica Harris paced the Dragons (3-0) with a double-double, registering 16 points and 10 boards. Jennifer Johnston notched a game-high 23 points and Mandy Jaeb added 21 and Karli Mast chipped in 14 markers to help Tiffin shoot 61.4 percent from the floor for the game.
Meanwhile, Mercyhurst (0-3) had three players in double-digits behind a team-high 20 tallies from
Amy Achesinski. Sam Loadman nearly missed a double-double effort with 12 points and nine boards while reserve
Lindsey Burke had a career day with 12 points and two steals while tying personal marks in rebounds (4) and assists (1). All of her shots were from beyond the arc, finishing 4-for-6 from 3-point land to establish a new career-high in made 3-pointers.
Both teams shot well from the floor, as Mercyhurst clipped at 50 percent from the field, including 11-for-22 from 3-point land. Tiffin also shot well from long-distance, knocking down 11-fo-18 from beyond the arc.
The Lakers trailed by just four at intermission but the hosts shot 62.1 percent from the field in the second half to outscore Mercyhurst by a 46-29 count.
The Lakers led by as many as seven to open the game thanks to a 10-3 run but Tiffin countered with a 10-0 run that featured back-to-back 3-pointers by Johnston to hand the hosts their first lead. From there, Tiffin held the lead until 9:26 when Achesinski's jumper reclaimed the lead for the Lakers. After a Dragon jumper,
Katie Carbee nailed a 3-pointer to give Mercyhurst the lead, and in the next possession, Loadman unleashed a three for the Lakers last lead of the game.
In the second half, Tiffin enjoyed a 24-10 advantage in the paint and had a 16-6 lead in points off turnovers as they would go on to lead by as many as 24 in the contest.
Next up for the Lakers is the Alaska-Fairbanks Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Tournament on Nov. 25 – 27. The Lakers will take on Fort Lewis on Thanksgiving Day.
