Lakers Drop Pair at PSAC Crossover

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the final day of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action Saturday afternoon. The Lakers fell to regional power Lock Haven 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) in the first match before East Stroudsburg held on for a five-set thriller (21-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-13) in the final match. 

In the opener against Lock Haven, the offensive duo of Haley Gribler and Xuan Gao proved too much for the Lakers as they both recorded a match-high 13 kills for the Lady Eagles. 

Leading Mercyhurst was a quartet of players with six kills each, including Becky Leusch, Gretta Freyermuth, Becky Smith and Stacey Miozzi. Setter Kiera Rebert contributed 17 assists. 
Defensively, Freyermuth paced the Lakers with 10 digs while Kendall Ashworth added eight and Elyse Texido recorded six digs. Justine Smith finished with nine block assist and Leusch added four block assists and one solo. 

In the final match of the crossover weekend, the Lakers won the first two sets but could not overcome a resilient ESU squad. Freyermuth paced Mercyhurst with 10 kills while rookie Sarah Vick contributed a season-high nine kills. Leusch continued steady play with seven kills while J. Smith added six. Rebert again led the directed the offense with 30 assists with Chelsea Hennigan adding 14 helpers.

Next up for the Lakers is a showdown with defending PSAC Champion California (Pa.).  Mercyhurst will host the Vulcans on Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m.
