SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team moves to 6-8-1 on the year after suffering a 2-1 loss to Slippery Rock University. Freshmen
Perrin Kern scored the lone goal for the Lakers making it her fourth netter of the year.
Mercyhurst was outshot 13-2 in the first half and were even with the Rock in terms of corner kicks 4-4. Sophomore
Rachel Griepsma made nine saves in the first half keeping the game scoreless going into halftime.
In the second period of the contest the Lakers held the Rock to just four shots and took four of their own. Slippery Rock made good use of its four shots scoring off of two of them. During the 49th minute of the game Shelby Ward scored on a Laker open net making the score 1-0. The Lakers held strong and recorded three shots at the goal before the Rock struck again, Kara Mullins tapped in a cross from teammate Danielle Turner. With the score 2-0 and less than ten minutes to go in the match the Lakers kept fighting, Kern netted her fourth goal of the season at the 82:44 minute mark cutting the Rock's lead to just one. The Lakers fell short, as Slippery Rock stiffened its defense and didn't allow another Mercyhurst shot.
The Lakers take a five day break and are back in action at Mercyhurst Soccer Field on October, 22 against No.13 West Chester University. West Chester carries a 12-1 record into the contest with a 10-1 PSAC record and currently sit in the No.1 spot in the conference.
