ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's soccer team took on the University of Lock Haven in what was a very defensive minded game. The Lakers came up short with a 1-0 loss to the Bald Eagles; the goal came early in the second period and proved to be the game winner.
Mercyhurst record stands at 6-7-1 following the loss, while Lock Haven improves to 5-7-1. In PSAC play the Lakers now stare at a 3-6-1 record, Lock Haven gets its third win in PSAC play and progresses to 3-7-1. This loss marks just the second time in 10 games the Bald Eagles have managed to beat the Lakers, Mercyhurst still holds the all-time advantage beating Lock Haven seven times.
The two teams displayed great defense from the whistle with Mercyhurst only able to get three shots off on goal in the first period, while Lock Haven struggled to get two shots off. Of those shots two were on target for both teams but were rejected by the goal keepers. Each team took two corners but either team could find anything inside the box, with the opponent quickly clearing the ball into safe grounds.
The second half was much of the same as the first, until Lock Haven's Arielle Gordon shook a defender and netted her fourth goal of the season. After the goal the Lakers put four shots on goal, but all were stopped by Lock Haven goal keeper Haley Zinn.
Rachel Griepsma made four saves of her own in the second half and totaled six throughout the contest, counterpart Zinn made seven saves throughout the contest.
The Lakers next match will be held in Slippery Rock, Pa. as they take on the Rock. Slippery Rock holds a record of 7-3-2 and they are 5-3-2 in the PSAC. The game time is set for 1 p.m. at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. Live stats will be available at
