Lakers Down Ohio Valley 2-0

Vienna, W. Va. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team struck twice in the second half for a 2-0 victory at PSAC opponent Ohio Valley Tuesday, Sept. 29. Jamie Laturell and Danielle Braun scored one goal each in the Lakers' win.

The Lakers dominated play throughout the afternoon, registering 29 shots while the Fighting Scots did not register a single shot. Ohio Valley played defensively, making no attemptt at goal. Despite the lopsided possession, Mercyhurst was unable to break into the scoring column during the first 45 minutes.

Following a scoreless first half, the Lakers continued pressuring in the offensive end, launching 13 shots during the second session. Jamie Laturell gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 65:33, taking a feed from Molly Marsh and beating the OVU keeper for her second goal of the season.

Freshman Danielle Braun scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute, her second of 2009, for a 2-0 Mercyhurst lead. The Fighting Scots never threatened once Mercyhurst gained the lead.

The Lakers placed 14 shots on goal and took 12 corner kicks to OVU's zero.

Junior keeper Rachel Griepsma returned to the lineup, earning her first career shutout. Ohio Valley's Abbi Menear made 12 saves in the loss.

Mercyhurst improves to 7-3-1 with the win, having won its last three contests. The Fighting Scots fall to 1-10 on the season. The Lakers have defeated each of the WVIAC teams on their schedule, including a 2-1 victory over W. Va. Wesleyan Sunday, Sept. 27.

Laturell's goal was her team-leading second game-winning goal this season.

Griepsma's shutout gave the Lakers three clean sheets on the season, with Amanda John posting the first two. This season marks the first time since 2006 where two different Laker keepers recorded shutouts in the same year. In 2006, Rebecca Heintzman registered six shutouts while Karen Eade recorded one.

The Lakers, second in the PSAC West at 5-1-1, will play at rival Gannon Friday night at 7 p.m. Mercyhurst downed the Golden Knights 1-0 Sept. 2, as Karla Vogt scored the game's lone goal in the 90th minute. The Golden Knights are 4-3-1, and tied for fourth place in the PSAC West with a 3-3-1 divisional record.
