Lakers Silence Storm Twice 10-2

Anna Glomb drove in seven runs and hit a grand slam Tuesday.
Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a pair of 10-2, five-inning victories Tuesday, April 14 against Lake Erie College at Mercyhurst Softball Field. For the day, the Lakers posted three five-run innings and allowed just 10 hits.

Mercyhurst advances to 17-20 on the season, while the Storm is now 5-24 in 2009.

The Lakers posted two five-run innings in the first game, with the first scoring coming in the bottom of the second inning. Anna Glomb got the Lakers on the board, driving in Amber Rapose. Elizabeth Maier singled in Glomb for Mercyhurst's second run. Maier then stole second, and Jen Bower scored on an error for a 3-0 Laker lead. Megan Houston drove in Maier, and then Michelle Schmitz hit an RBI triple, giving the Lakers a 5-0 advanatage after two innings. Lake Erie responded with one run in each of the next two innings to cut the deficit to three runs at 5-2 after four and a half innings.

Mercyhurst removed all doubt in the bottom of the fifth. After hits by Emily Redig and Erica Beidler, Raspose walked to load the bases for Glomb. Glomb then laced a grand slam round-tripper, giving Mercyhurst a 9-0 edge. Kara Gorgos singled in Bower for the 10th run, ending the game with a 10-2 score after five innings.

Amanda Norman pitched two three-hit shutout innings to start the first game, while Kari Amboyer finished the game, giving up two runs on four hits to earn her first win of the season. Glomb registered five RBI, the most in one game by a Laker since Houston drove in five runs March 31, 2007 against Wayne State. Her grand slam was the second by a Mercyhurst player this season.

Beidler, Glomb, Houston and Maier each went 2-for-3, while Bower Glomb and Rapose each scored two runs. Schmitz tied the single-season program record with her RBI, giving her 41 for the season. Current assistant coach Jen Feret also drove in 41 runs in 2007.

The Storm took an early lead in the second game, as they scored two runs and had runners on second and third with just one out. Kristi Janoske struck out the remaining two hitters in the inning, holding down Lake Erie to a 2-0 edge. She pitched brilliantly for the rest of the game, allowing no runs on one hit in the second through fifth innings. Mercyhurst answered in the bottom of the first with one run, as Maier crossed the plate. Following two scoreless innings, the Lakers added their third five-run inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bower homered to left field, driving in Redig and Rapose for a 4-2 lead. Maier plated Gorgos with a single, and Maier scored on a Houston single for a 6-2 Laker advantage.

After Lake Erie had an empty half of the fifth inning, Mercyhurst scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Redig scored on an error to make it 7-2. Glomb then added two more RBI, driving in Rapose and Beidler. Bower knocked in Glomb to complete the rout, 10-2 in five innings.

Janoske allowed two runs on three hits in five innings, gaining her ninth win of the season. The Lakers posted 10 runs on 11 hits. Maier batted 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Houston went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Redig and Rapose each scored one run. Bower batted 1-of-3 with a three-run homer, her fourth of the season. Glomb registered two RBI, giving her seven runs batted in for the day.

The Lakers return to action Thursday at home against Gannon, the first of three PSAC West double-headers in as many days. Thursday's double-header begins at 3 p.m. at Mercyhurst Softball Field.
