Lakers Defeat Wilmington 10-2, Fall 4-3 to Bellarmine

Orlando, Fla. – The Mercyhurst softball team split two games Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games, defeating Wilmington (Del.) 10-2 before dropping a 4-3 decision to Bellarmine. 

The Lakers have gone 3-3 during the first six games of their Rebel Spring Games schedule, with four remaining. 

Against Wilmington, Mercyhurst trailed 1-0 after two and a half innings, but broke through with seven runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-2 victory in six innings. For the game, Mercyhurst scored 10 runs on eight hits. Junior Elizabeth Maier went 4-for-4, while junior Megan Houston batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Norman gave up two runs on three hits for her first win of the season. 

In the second game of the afternoon, Bellarmine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, and the Lakers tied the game in the top half of the third. After the Knights scored another run in the bottom of the fourth, Mercyhurst answered with a run of its own in the top of the fifth. Bellarmine pushed two runs across in the bottom of the sixth, and the Lakers scored just once in the seventh and the Knights prevailed 4-3. Houston went 2-for-4 against Bellarmine, while sophomore Amber Rapose laced a triple. 

On the day, Houston went 5-8 with two doubles and 3 RBI. Maier batted 6-8, while sophomore Michelle Schmitz hit 3-for-8 with a double and 3 RBI. 

The Lakers scored 14 runs Tuesday against Holy Family in their last game before Thursday's 10-2 triumph over Wilmington. The last time Mercyhurst had scored 10 or more runs in back-to-back games was March 1, 1999, when they beat Dominican 11-0 before defeating Salem Teikyo 12-1.

The Lakers continue their games in Florida Friday, March 6, playing against former GLIAC foe Northwood (Mich.) at 1 p.m. before taking on the University of Mary (N.D.) at 5 p.m. The last time the Lakers faced Northwood was May 2, 2008, when Mercyhurst downed the Timberwolves 6-5 in 10 innings during the GLIAC tournament.
