Salem, Va. – The Mercyhurst softball team earned a split of two games Friday, March 20 at the Salem International tournament. The Lakers defeated Seton Hill 2-0 before falling to Charleston by the same score of 2-0.
As a result of Friday's games, the Lakers' record stands at 8-8.
Against Seton Hill, sophomore pitcher
Amanda Norman fashioned a two-hit shutout, her first career complete game with no runs allowed. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Mercyhurst scored one run. The Lakers added one more tally in the fifth inning and prevailed 2-0 for their first shutout win of the season.
Jen Bower doubled in the victory, as Mercyhurst scored two runs on six hits. Norman improved to 3-4 on the season with the win.
Mercyhurst then took on Charleston and, as in the Seton Hill contest, the game remained scoreless into the later innings. Charleston scored the game's only two runs in the top of the sixth inning, as Mercyhurst was unable to respond in their remaining times at bat. Freshman pitcher
Kristi Janoske gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, falling to 5-4 on the season.
Erica Beidler recorded a double for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst's 2-0 shutout over Seton Hill Friday marked the Lakers' first shutout win since April 26, 2008, a 1-0 triumph over Saginaw Valley State.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday, March 21, facing host institution Salem International at 9 a.m. before taking on Shepherd at 1 p.m.
