Softball Posts 1-1 Record in First Day in Florida

Liz Maier and Kristi Janoske helped the Lakers to their first win Monday.
Orlando, Fla. – The Mercyhurst softball team opened its season with a split of two games, defeating University of the Sciences 6-1 before falling 13-1 to No. 13 Lewis University Monday in Orlando, Fla. 

Against USP, junior Elizabeth Maier went 4-for-4 with a double and also stole a base. Junior Anna Glomb batted 1-of-2 with a triple. Freshman pitcher Kristi Janoske earned her first career victory. 

In their second game, the Lakers trailed 2-1 after the first inning, as sophomore Michelle Schmitz drove in Kara Gorgos for Mercyhurst's run. Schmitz finished 2-for-2 with one RBI. Lewis added two runs in the third, and six in the fourth on their way to a 13-1 win in five innings. Lewis is now 12-7, while the Lakers' record stands at 1-1. 

On Tuesday, Mercyhurst plays Kentucky Wesleyan at 1 p.m. before taking on Holy Family at 3 p.m.
