No. 3 Lakers Down Wayne State for 12th Straight Win

Detroit, Mich. – The No. 3 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team extended its winning streak to 12 games Friday evening, as the Lakers defeated College Hockey America foe Wayne State, 4-3, at the City Sports Arena in Detroit, Mich. The Lakers improve to 26-5-0 overall and 15-0-0 in conference play while the Warriors fall 20-7-2 on the season and 11-4-0 in CHA action.

After falling behind on an early goal by Melissa Boal just 13 seconds into the contest, Mercyhurst bounced back in a big way, outshooting the Warriors, 39-18, while scoring four unanswered goals.

Junior captain Meghan Agosta started the run when she scored her 34th goal of the season on the power-play at 4:43. Assists were credited to senior assistant captain Valerie Chouinard and sophomore assistant captain Vicki Bendus.

The score remained the same until midway through the second period when the Lakers caught fire with three strikes within a 2:39 span. Sophomore Geena Prough made the score, 2-1, thanks to a couple of passes from sophomore Ashley Cockell and senior Hayley McMeekin at 8:44. Chouinard then stretched the lead to two with a short-handed goal set up by McMeekin at 10:39. Freshman Bailey Bram wrapped up the barrage with her 14th score of the season, firing a shot made possible by Bendus and freshman Kelley Steadman past Delayne Brian at 11:33.

Wayne State closed out the game with back-to-back goals. Boal notched her second of the match shortly after the Bram score at 16:49 while Lindsay DiPietro pulled the Warriors within one on an extra-attacker situation at 18:19 of the third.

Freshman Hillary Pattenden secured her 19th win of the season with 16 saves and helped hold the nation's second-ranked power-play unit to a 1-for-10 mark. Mercyhurst, on the other hand, converted 1-for-7 with the extra-man.

Mercyhurst resumes its two-game series with Wayne State on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a 2 p.m. contest at the City Sports Arena.
