Cheyney, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's basketball team trailed by three points at halftime, and tied the game four times in the second half, before Cheyney pulled away for a 60-43 victory over the Lakers Sunday in PSAC crossover action.
The Lakers are now 5-6, while the Wolves improve to 5-2 with the win.
Cheyney jumped out to a commanding lead early in the contest, forcing turnovers and running out to a 21-7 lead with 8:47 left in the first half. The Lakers responded with a 15-2 run, pulling to within one point at 23-22 with 1:23 to play in the opening session. The run was keyed by

Amy Achesinski. Following the Lakers' surge, the Wolves scored the final basket of the half to take a 25-22 lead into intermission.
Mercyhurst and Cheyney each shot 35 percent from the field in the first half, and the Lakers hit four three-pointers out of 14 attempts. The teams each grabbed 18 rebounds in the first half.
The Wolves scored the first basket of the second half to take a five point lead at 27-22. Following the basket, the Lakers went on an 11-6 run, tying the score four times, with the last occasion coming with 14:32 remaining when Achesinski made a layup to knot the score at 33 apiece. After a 4-0 Cheyney run, Achesinski closed the gap to two points at 37-35 with 12:04 left in the game. The Wolves outscored the Lakers 23-8 over the final 12 minutes of play to capture a 60-43 victory over the visiting Lakers.
Turnovers proved costly for the Lakers all game, as Mercyhurst turned the ball over 27 times. The Wolves shot 46.7 percent in the second half to bring their field goal percentage to 40.6 percent for the game. The Lakers finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from field goal range and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Cheyney held a slight 36-33 edge in rebounds, including 16-9 in offensive boards.
Achesinski led the Lakers with 14 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season and ninth for her career. She passed the 600-point mark in her career during Sunday's game.
Prischak hit three three-pointers for nine points.
Samantha Loadman scored seven points and chipped in one three-point goal.
Jackie Artise and Gordon each scored four points. Spetoskey added one three-pointer for three points, and
Mara Dreiser scored two points and pulled down four rebounds.
Abby Allen dished out a team-high three assists and collected four rebounds.
For the Wolves, Stephanie Orji recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Angel Stephens scored 15 points and had nine rebounds.
Sunday marked the first time the two programs have met.
The Lakers host two PSAC crossover games this coming week, as they play West Chester (7-4) Saturday, Jan. 10 and then square off against Millersville (9-2) Sunday, Jan. 11. Both games tip off at 1 p.m.
