Vicki Bendus recorded two assists apiece, as the No. 5 / 6 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed the sweep of No. 10 Wayne State with a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers, who are now 16-1 in their last 17 games, improve to 19-5-0 overall and 8-0-0 in College Hockey America play.
Mercyhurst built a 4-0 lead through the first two periods. Sophomore
Cassea Schols gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead early in the game thanks to a couple of assists from Bendus and sophomore
Geena Prough at 8:16.
Jones then extended the advantage to 3-0 with back-to-back markers late in the first and midway through the second. Her first came off a long pass from Agosta that she slid past the outstretched leg of Brian with 2:22 remaining in the frame, while her second was a deflection off a shot from freshman
Pamela Zgoda at the 10:44 mark of the second.
Sophomore
Jesse Scanzano finished the attack with her 20
th goal of the season on the power-play just 37 seconds later at 11:21.
Wayne State would cut the lead to two with consecutive goals midway through the third period. Natalie Payne added her second of the series at 7:50 while Lindsay DiPietro brought Warriors within two with her second as well at 11:18.
Mercyhurst controlled the tempo of the game with a 34-25 edge in shots and a 1-for-5 mark on the power-play. Wayne State finished the game 1-for-8 with the extra-man.
Freshman
Hillary Pattenden stopped 23 shots to improve her season record to 15-2-0. Brian, on the other hand, made 30 saves as she fell to 11-3-0.
The Lakers return to College Hockey America play this weekend with a two-game series against Niagara on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Dwyer Arena in Niagara University, N.Y.
