No. 4 Lakers Roll Past No. 10 Connecticut, 5-2

Storrs, Conn. – Senior Valerie Chouinard and sophomore Jesse Scanzano scored two goals apiece to lead the No. 4 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over No. 10 Connecticut Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 15-5-0 on the season and 7-1-2 all-time against the Huskies.

After having their 11-game winning streak snapped the night before, the Lakers returned the favor by ending the Huskies' run at nine games. Chouinard got the Lakers rolling with back-to-back scores to start the game. Her first strike gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead with 11:37 elapsed in the first period while her second stretched the lead to 2-0 just 2:36 into the second.

Less than a minute later, sophomore Vicki Bendus made it 3-0 when she lit the lamp with the eventual game-winner at 3:31.

Both teams traded goals to close out the period. Brittany Murphy got the Huskies on the board with an extra-attacker score at 13:52 while Scanzano struck pay dirt on the power-play at 17:25. Chouinard and Bendus picked up helpers on Scanzano's goal to finish the game with three and two points, respectively.

Connecticut cut the deficit back to two to start the third when Michelle Binning tallied her 15th goal of the season at 5:59. However, Scanzano would finish the game off with an empty-net score with under a minute to play.

Senior Courtney Drennen registered 25 saves to earn her second straight decision and even her season record at 3-3-0.

Mercyhurst finished the game with a 38-27 edge in shots while converting 1-for-4 on the power-play. Connecticut was 1-for-5 with the extra-man.

The Lakers return to College Hockey America play next weekend with a pair of games at Robert Morris on Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24.
