No. 24 Mercyurst, Gannon Stage Dramatic Tie

Sarah Powell scored two late goals in the Lakers' 2-2 tie.
Erie, Pa. – A frantic final two and a half minutes of regulation produced three goals, as No. 24 Mercyhurst and Gannon battled to a 2-2 draw in Tuesday's women's soccer match, held at Mercyhurst.

Gannon controlled the run of play for a majority of the match, but led just 1-0 with under three minutes remaining, a lead that appeared safe until Mercyhurst defender Jamie Schroter took a corner kick. She found Sarah Powell in front of the net, who then blasted a shot past Golden Knights keeper Sabrina Chirco to tie the match at 1-1 at the 87:55 mark. Powell's goal, her fifth of the season, was aided by Schroter's seventh assist on the campaign.

The Lakers added the go-ahead goal a minute and a half later, as Christine Rehnert sent an end line cross in to Powell, who fired a shot into the net to take a 2-1 lead with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Her goal was her sixth of the season.

The Golden Knights worked quickly down the field, and beat the buzzer as Amanda Sharbaugh scored a goal, assisted by Katie Urban with five seconds remaining in regulation time to knot up the match at 2-2.

Two overtimes failed to decide a winner, giving each side one point in the conference standings.

With the draw, Mercyhurst is now 5-2-2, 3-1-2 in the PSAC West, while Gannon is 5-1-1, 4-1-1 in PSAC West play.

Gannon's initial goal came off of a direct free kick by Courtney Rowan with 1:55 remaining in the first half. The goal was Rowan's fifth of 2008.

The Lakers were outshot 20-11 on the afternoon, including 8-3 in shots on goal.

Powell's two goals give her 56 for her career, as well as 151 points.

Mercyhurst remains unbeaten against Gannon all-time with the draw. The two teams face each other October 28 at Gannon for the season finale.

Mercyhurst hosts Lake Erie College Monday at 4:00 p.m.
