Meadville, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's tennis team dominated the top of the lineup and rolled to a 5-4 season-opening victory over Allegheny College Tuesday in a match that was not as close as the score indicated. The Lakers won all five of their matches in easy fashion, lost two singles matches in third-set super tiebreaks and lost a doubles match 9-7.
Mercyhurst was never really challenged in the top two doubles spots and the top three singles spots.
Jaclyn McLean and
Meghan Raynor won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and
Kim Ezzo and
Courtney Conway did the same at No. 2 doubles. Ezzo had a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win at the top of the singles lineup and Raynor posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. McLean won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Lakers almost won three other matches as
Natalie Iovino and
Kelton Macke were edged 9-7 at No. 3 doubles. Conway won her opening singles set in the No. 5 spot, but eventually lost in a super tiebreak 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 10-3. Macke also won her opening set at No. 6, but lost the second set in a tiebreak and then dropped the third set super tiebreak 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-3.
Mercyhurst will have double-duty Saturday as the Lakers will play a pair of matches at Slippery Rock. Mercyhurst plays West Chester at 10 a.m. and will turn around and play Cheyney at 2 p.m.
