Lakers Roll Past Seton Hill In Season Opener

Billy Colton followed up a 16 goal season with a goal in the 2008 season opener.
Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half to open the 2008 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Seton Hill Thursday. Junior transfer David Miller had a goal and an assist in his first game with the Lakers.

Senior goalkeeper Danny Mudd recorded his 15th career shutout and made a pair of spectacular saves in the early going to keep Seton Hill off the board. The Griffins' Andrew Butler broke behind the defense twice in the first seven minutes and Mudd made point-blank saves on both opportunities. From there, the Laker defense settled down and Mudd was forced to make just two more saves the rest of the contest.

After an evenly played first half, the Lakers outshot Seton Hill 11-3 in the final 45 minutes and had four corner kicks, while the Griffins had none. Miller finally broke the scoreless tie on a pass from senior Marty Powell just 75 seconds into the second half.

With that score, the floodgates opened and Nicholas Thompson scored on an assist from Billy Ninopoulos less than four minutes later to make it 2-0. Billy Colton followed up a strong freshman season in which he scored 16 goals by tallying the final score of the contest on a pass from Miller.

For the contest, Mercyhurst outshot Seton Hill 19-9. The Lakers had five shots on goal and the Griffins had four.

Seton Hill falls to 0-1 on the season and Mercyhurst moves to 1-0 for the first time since the 2006 season. The Lakers will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action early, playing at California (Pa.) Tuesday at 4 p.m.
