Allendale, Mich. -
Mercyhurst baseball senior Joe Luli cranked a grand slam in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Grand Valley State, but it was not enough, as the Lakers fell 10-4. Mercyhurst also dropped game one, 4-1.
Grand Valley State took three of four from Mercyhurst on the weekend, which drops the Lakers to 23-23 overall and 9-17 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. GVSU, meanwhile, improves to 29-11 overall and 15-7 in the conference.
In game one, Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead on starter Eric Drobotij (1-4) with one run in each of the first two innings. Drobotij, however, managed to settle in and allowed two earned runs, four total, in 5.1 innings before handing the ball to James Ludwig for his GLIAC-leading 24th appearance of the season.
Drobotij, however, was outdueled by Brad Raj (5-1), who limited the Lakers to one run on six hits while going the distance.
Freshman Craig Denman drove in the Lakers' only run in the second inning. Adam Schlessel went 2-for-3 to lead the team at the plate.
Mercyhurst's only runs in game two came in the sixth off Luli's grand slam. It was his fourth homer of the season, tying him for the team lead.
The Lakers did managed eight hits, including two from Jonathan Keppler and two from Dan Bertolini, but the four runs was not enough, as Grand Valley State scored three in the first and one in the second off Thurman Schaetzle (0-1). Mercyhurst used four pitchers in the game, including Adam Gray, who made his first appearance of the season and pitched two innings in relief.
