Feb. 16, 2008

Stats

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst got goals from five different players to trim Niagara 5-1 Saturday at the Ice Center and sweep the weekend series. The Lakers improved to 21-6-3 overall and 6-1-1 in College Hockey America (CHA) while the Purple Eagles left Erie with 7-19-4 and 1-7-0 marks.

The Lakers, playing four skaters short for the second straight game, broke on top midway in the first period when freshman Melissa Lacroix scored the lone goal of the opening period and her second of the year with help from forwards Sherilyn Fraser and Cheyenne Bojeski. Mercyhurst outshot Niagara 20-4 in the first twenty minutes.

The lead grew to 3-0 after forty minutes when both senior Danielle Ayearst and freshman Geena Prough found the back of the net at 10:21 and 16:31 of the middle period. Senior Stephanie Jones and freshman Vicki Bendus helped on Ayearst's second of the season while freshman Cassie Schols assisted on Prough's lamplighter. Mercyhurst continued to pepper Niagara goalie Jill Zelonis (4-9-3), outshooting the Purple Eagles 25-4 in the second session.

Niagara got on the board at 4:37 of the third when freshman Marie Linander Henriksen beat Mercyhurst senior goaltender Laura Hosier (16-5-3). But that was as close as the Purple Eagles would get as Bendus and Fraser concluded the scoring with their 10th and 3rd goals of the season respectively at 7:30 and 16:34. Junior Natalie Payne assisted on Bendus' fourth goal of the weekend while Ayearst and senior Kristen Erickson helped on Fraser's lamplighter. Niagara, which had four successive power plays in the period, outshot Mercyhurst 15-9 in the third.

The Lakers finished 0 of 3 with the skater advantage while the Purple Eagles ended up 0 for 5. The Lakers outshot Niagara 54-23 overall, swept all four games against the Purple Eagles this season, and improved to 25-4-2 lifetime.

Mercyhurst will travel to Detroit next weekend for a pair of games with Wayne State. The Warriors defeated Mercyhurst 5-4 in overtime and tied the Lakers 2-2 in overtime at the Ice Center last weekend.
