Meghan Agosta scored two power-play goals and the Laker defense limited the opposition to just 11 shots as the No. 8 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed the sweep of No. 4 St. Lawrence with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers improve to 12-4-0 with their ninth-straight victory.
Agosta marked her fourth two-goal performance of the season with an extra-man marker in the first period and the game-winner with two Saints in the penalty box in the second.
The Ruthven, Ontario native produced a 1-0 lead when she collected a rebound from a shot by sophomore
Ashley Cockell and knocked it into a wide-open net at 12:56. The goal, which marked her 11th of the season, also extended her point streak to eight games.
She later pushed the score to two with a 5-on-3 tally in the second, taking a pass from senior
Hayley McMeekin and burying it past Minnesota-transfer Brittony Chartier with 12:36 remaining. Senior
Valerie Chouinard picked up the secondary assist on the play.
St. Lawrence got on the board late in the middle stanza when Carson Duggan connected on a pass from teammate Vanessa Edmond at the 15:24 mark.
Mercyhurst controlled the game with a hefty advantage in shots and great specials teams. The Lakers outshot the Saints 16-2 in the first and 15-6 in the second before posting a 15-3 margin in the third. The penalty kill held the Saints scoreless through seven chances and allowed just three shots on net. Mercyhurst was 2-for-9 on the power-play.
Freshman
Hillary Pattenden marked her 11th win of the season with 10 saves made. Counterpart Chartier made 41 saves for the Saints.
Mercyhurst is next in action on Saturday, January 10 when the Lakers host Vermont in a 2 p.m. contest followed by a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, January 11.
