Edinboro, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women's volleyball team earned its first victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference postseason play Tuesday evening, dispatching of Edinboro, 3-1, at the McComb Field House in Edinboro, Pa.
With the victory, the Lakers improve to 21-13 overall and earn their first win over the Fighting Scots in three attempts this season.
After taking the first set by a score of 25-17, the Lakers saw the Fighting Scots claw their way back to win the second by a score of 25-22. However, Mercyhurst rebounded in sets three and four with back-to-back two point victories (27-25, 26-24).
Several Lakers put on exceptional performances in the match. Seniors
Jenna Matson and Laura Kubinski led the attack with 30 combined kills. Matson earned her second-highest four set kill total with 17 while Kubinski added 13 in the win.
Sophomore
Kendall Ashworth finished the match with 20 digs, surpassing her previous season-best of 18 (East Stroudsburg, Oct. 3). Sophomore
Katie Fritz capped the game off with 18.
Junior
Julia Butler notched 46 assists to equal her four-set high for the third time this season. She originally accomplished the feat on Sept. 3 against Slippery Rock while later tying it against Houghton on Oct. 14.
Mercyhurst will now advance to play Lock Haven in the PSAC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 14 in California, Pa. The Lakers are 1-0 against the top seed from the PSAC East, beating the Bald Eagles, 3-0, back on Sept. 27.
