Hamilton, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst College women's hockey team suffered its third straight loss Friday evening, falling to Colgate, 4-3, at the Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 3-4 on the season and match their longest losing streak since the 2005-06 season.
Despite committing 10 penalties and registering 18 shots on goal, Colgate was able to overcome a 1-0 deficit with four straight goals over the span of 31 minutes.
Mercyhurst broke the ice late in the first period when sophomore
Ashley Cockell connected off a pass from freshman
Kelley Steadman on the power-play at 16:17. Freshman
Pamela Zgoda earned the second assist on the play.
The Raiders answered the score with three of their own in the second period. Elin Brown netted her first of the game on the power-play at 4:44 to tie the game at one, while Sam Hunt lit the lamp on a 5-on-3 opportunity at 17:04. Colgate extended the advantage thanks to a goal from Hannah Milan at 19:04, taking a 3-1 score into the third period.
Brown gave her team the eventual game-winner when she beat senior
Courtney Drennen with 5:23 remaining in the frame. Drennen finished the game with 14 saves and two even-strength goals allowed.
Freshman
Bailey Bram closed out the scoring with back-to-back goals late in the third. Bram brought the Lakers within two off an assist from sophomore
Geena Prough at 15:34, while drawing the team near even at 18:42 with an extra-attacker on the ice.
Colgate's Kimberly Sass proved to be a factor in the Raiders' victory, stopping 34 of 37 shots.
The Lakers conclude their two-game series with Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.
