Lakers Fall 3-0 To Golden Knights

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team lost 3-0 to cross town rival Gannon Wednesday night at Gannon University Field.

The Lakers had an opportunity to claim the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West with a win, but they are now in second place with 11 points and will have to wait on one score Saturday to see if they qualify for the PSAC tournament. If PSAC West leader Slippery Rock defeats or ties California (Pa.), Saturday, then the Lakers will make the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed in the PSAC West. Cal has 10 points in the PSAC West table.

Mercyhurst has finished the PSAC West schedule at 3-3-2 and sports a 9-5-2 overall record. The Golden Knights conclude their season at 10-6-1, 3-4-1 in the PSAC West.

Gannon scored its first goal of the evening in the sixth minute off of a corner kick. Mario Gestaldo sent a kick into the penalty area, where the ball got kicked around before Chad Wynter struck it into the net for a 1-0 Gannon lead. The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the half.

Mercyhurst applied more offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting Gannon 12-11 in the final frame. Despite the Lakers' surge, they were unable to beat keeper Steven Boehmer.

Wynter added his second goal of the game at 74:41, and Dan Howell scored less than a minute later to provide the final score of 3-0.

Boehmer made six saves for his fifth shutout of the season and Danny Mudd made nine saves.

Mercyhurst plays at Ohio Valley in a non-conference road match Saturday at 2 p.m. to finish its regular season slate.
