Lakers, Golden Knights Brave Elements In 0-0 Draw

Keeper Rebecca Heintzman recorded her 18th career shutout.
Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team played Gannon to a 0-0 draw Tuesday night, with both teams braving horrible weather conditions on the Golden Knights' Senior Night.

With the tie, the Lakers concluded their regular season at 10-4-4, 8-2-4 in the PSAC West. Gannon is now 10-5-2, including an 8-3-2 mark in PSAC West play with one game remaining. Mercyhurst has already clinched a PSAC tournament first round home game. The Golden Knights play IUP Saturday with a playoff bid on the line.

Both teams had trouble dealing with windy and rainy conditions throughout the match, leading to few scoring chances for either side. Gannon outshot Mercyhurst 7-3 in the opening frame and 2-1 in shots on frame as the teams played to a scoreless first half.

The Lakers controlled most of the possession in the second half and were able to generate a few quality scoring opportunities, none better than in the 80th minute. Sarah Powell took a shot from inside the box that keeper Sabrina Chirco stopped. Powell struck the rebound off of the crossbar and in the ensuing scramble Taylor Hilinski shot the ball wide. Regulation ended in a scoreless tie, forcing overtime.

Neither team was able to generate a shot in the first overtime, but Gannon took three shots in the second half, though the match remained scoreless and ended in a draw.

Mercyhurst keeper Rebecca Heintzman made two saves for her second shutout of the season, while Gannon keeper Sabrina Chirco recorded seven stops in her eighth shutout of the season.

Both matches between Mercyhurst and Gannon this season have ended in ties, as the two ties battled to a 2-2 draw Sept. 23. Last year's meeting ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning that three of the four draws in the all-time series have come in as many meetings in 2007 and 2008. The first-ever meeting between the two programs ended in a 0-0 tie in 1987. The Lakers hold a 19-0-4 advantage in the series.

Mercyhurst will play an opening-round home match Tuesday, with the opponent to be determined.
