Lakers Defeat The Rock 2-1

Jamie Schroter scored a goal and one assist in Mercyhurst's 2-1 win.
Slippery Rock, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team used two second-half goals to defeat Slippery Rock 2-1 in a key PSAC West contest Tuesday. The Lakers have taken over first place in the PSAC West with the win. Jamie Schroter contributed a goal and an assist in the victory.
 
Mercyhurst improves to 9-4-2, 7-2-3 in the PSAC Western Division with two games remaining. The Rock is now 11-4-1, and is tied with Gannon for second in the PSAC West with a 7-3-1 conference record.
 
Shortly after halftime, Sarah Powell got the Lakers broke the scoreless tie with her 15th goal of the season, assisted by Schroter at 50:56. The assist was Schroter's 10th of the season.
 
Schroter scored a goal on a long free kick at 71:45. Her fifth goal of the campaign gave Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead.
 
The Rock applied late pressure to get back in the match and Alison Hindley cut the deficit to 2-1 at 78:55. Hindley took a pass from Whitney Warmus and fired a shot past Laker keeper Rebecca Heintzman for her 14th goal of the season.
 
The Lakers held on the rest of the way for the 2-1 win.
 
Mercyhurst controlled play for a majority of the contest and the defense held Slippery Rock to seven shots, five of which were on frame. The Lakers attempted 17 shots, including eight shots on target.
 
Powell has scored six goals in the last four games. Schroter's 10 helpers in 2008 mark a career-high, and the first 10-assist effort for Mercyhurst since Powell's recorded 10 assists in 2006.
 
Both meetings this season between the Lakers and The Rock ended in 2-1 Mercyhurst victories.
 
The Lakers host Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at 4 p.m. in their final regular season home contest. IUP beat Mercyhurst 2-1 on Sept. 13 at Indiana.
