Clarion, Pa. – The No. 25 Mercyhurst women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 15 and a half minutes of play on the way to its 6-0 win Sunday at Clarion. Senior Sarah Powell recorded two goals in the game, including the 60th of her collegiate career.
Mercyhurst improves to 7-3-3, 5-1-3 in the PSAC West. Clarion is now 3-9-2, 0-7-2 in PSAC West play.
Taylor Hilinski got the scoring underway in the fourth minute, taking a cross from Powell for a goal on a one-timer, her eighth tally on the season.
Hilinski returned the favor in the 11th minute, setting up Powell for a goal of her own to make it 2-0 Lakers at 10:24.
Jamie Schroter scored an unassisted goal on a long shot at 15:33, as Mercyhurst took a quick 3-0 lead. The goal was Schroter's fourth on the season.
The Lakers then added three markers in the second half, with Powell scoring her second on the contest just ten minutes into the second half. The goal was Powell's 11th on the season and 60th for her career.
Lisa Melander added a tally in the 76th minute. The goal was Melander's third on the season and was assisted by Schroter, who leads the PSAC with nine assists.
Lindsey Meyer capped the Lakers' offensive outburst with a goal off of a rebound in the 88
th minute, providing the final 6-0 score. Meyer's goal was her second on the season, and was assisted by
Elena Reed.
Powell reached three career milestones in the contest, registering her 60th goal, 40th assist and 160th point.
Goalkeepers Rebecca Heintzman and
Rachel Griepsma combined for the five-save shutout.
Schroter has matched her 2007 season total of nine assists.
The Lakers outshot Clarion 17-8 for the contest, including 11-5 in shots on goal.
Mercyhurst hosts Lock Haven Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Lakers beat the Bald Eagles 1-0 on Oct. 1.
