Mercyhurst Shuts Out Lock Haven, 1-0

Jamie Schroter's free kick set up Sarah Powell's game-winning goal.
Lock Haven, Pa. – Sarah Powell scored a brilliant goal off of a Jamie Schroter indirect free kick, leading the Mercyhurst women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at PSAC West opponent Lock Haven Wednesday.

The Lakers improve to 6-2-2, 4-1-2 in PSAC West play, wrapping up the first half of their PSAC West schedule, while Lock Haven is now 4-6, 2-5 in the PSAC Western Division.

It appeared that the first half would end scoreless, and then the Bald Eagles were called offside in the midfield. Schroter launched a free kick that travelled nearly 60 yards in the air, finding Powell for a header that eluded the keeper with 4:45 remaining in the first half. The goal was Powell's team-leading eighth on the season, and was aided by Schroter's eighth assist on the campaign.

Mercyhurst dominated the first half, leading 1-0 on the scoreboard and outshooting Lock Haven 11-1, including 6-0 in shots on goal.

Lock Haven was unable to find the equalizer in the second half, as Mercyhurst prevailed 1-0.

The Laker defense kept the Bald Eagles to the outside, not giving many clear looks at net, as Lock Haven only registered five shots during the match, with just two requiring stops by Rebecca Heintzman.

Heintzman earned the shutout, her first on the season and 17th for her career.

The Lakers travel to meet PSAC East leader and No. 9 West Chester Saturday, with the match beginning at 2:00 p.m.
