Mercyhurst and Bentley battled to a 3-3 overtime tie Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) contest. Both the Lakers (7-14-4, AH 7-6-4) and Falcons (6-13-4, 6-7-4) picked up a point in the tightly-bunched conference.
The two teams took a combined 80 shots, 43 by Bentley, in the entertaining contest. The Lakers scored twice in the first period, getting firt goals of the season from sophomores Cullen Eddy and Chris Risi after Bentley freshman Erik Peterson gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with his 9th of the season at 5:31. The Lakers outshot the Falcons 16-13 in the first twenty minutes.
The second period produced two Bentley goals and a missed Mercyhurst penalty shot. Sophomore defenseman Justin Kemmerer tied the game at 2-2 with an even strength goal at 3:46 before Peterson put Bentley ahead with his second of the game at 15:29 on a power play. The go-ahead score came just 16 seconds after a Mercyhurst penalty and three minutes after Robinson was denied on a penalty shot by Bentley junior goalie Jason Kearney (0-2-1). Bentley had a 20-5 shot advantage in the second period.
Freshman Steve Cameron got the Lakers even at 2:23 of the third, just five seconds after a Bentley penalty had expired. Neither team would score again.
Robinson and senior Kerry Bowman helped on Eddy's goal, Jesse Echternach and Neil Graham helped on Risi's, and Jamie Coghlan and Eddy collaborated on Cameron's tying marker.
Junior Matt Lundin (5-7-3) made 40 saves as the Lakers played their sixth overtime game of the season (0-2-4). Mercyhurst finished 0 for 5 on the power play while Bentley was 1 of 6. The two teams will conclude the weekend series Saturday night ast 7:05.
