Erie, Pa. -
Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta registered the third four-goal game of her career as Mercyhurst defeated stubborn Brown 4-2 Saturday night. No. 6 Mercyhurst improved to 17-5-2 while Brown, a 5-2 winner at Niagara Friday night, dropped to 3-13-3.
Some fans left the Ice Center calling it a "shoe trick". After Agosta's third of the night gave Mercyhurst a 3-2 lead with less than eight minutes to play, exuberant fans threw hats onto the ice. And when she scored shorthanded and into an empty net with 41 seconds left to secure the win, some responded with shoes; hence the term.
After the Bears jumped to a 1-0 lead on the first career goal by freshman Maggie Suprey, a power play, Agosta tied the game less than four minutes later with help from junior Valerie Chouinard and freshman Cassea Schols. Mercyhurst outshot Brown by a football score-like 28-7 in the first period as Brown junior goalie Nicole Stock broke the career mark for saves in a period.
Agosta scored the lone seecond period goal, from freshman Jesse Scanzano, at 12:22. The Lakers again owned a wide 23-9 advantage in second period shots.
Brown sophomore forward Andrea Hunter tied the game at 2-2 early in the third when she cashed a rebound from in close. Agosta broke the tie at 12:31 with her third of the game and solidified the Lakers' 17th win when she scored into an empty net at 19:19 with the team down a skater. The shoes on the ice brought a delay of game penalty against Mercyhurst, giving the Bears a two-player advantage. But the Lakers defense held.
Chouinard assisted on Agosta's third lamplighter and goaltender Laura Hosier's (13-4-2) helped on the fourth, her first assist of the season and third of her career.
Agosta extended her team-record point-scoring streak to 18 games while Hosier strectched her team mark for career wins to 66.
Stock (3-13-2), who earned the game's second star behind Agosta, set a second Brown record in the game by making 66 saves as the Lakers outshot the Bears 70-26.
Despite 28 shots, Mercyhurst finished 0 of 10 on the power play, twice being denied in 5-on-3 situations. Brown ended 1 for 8. The Lakers improved to 5-2-0 lifetime againt Brown.
Mercyhurst will return to action next Friday and Saturday when ECAC Hockey League and former College Hockey America-member Quinnipiac (3-16-4) visits for 7pm and 2pm games.
