Women's Volleyball Cruises Past Ohio Valley on Day Two of Laker Invitational

Erie, Pa. - Sophomore Julia Butler recorded 42 assists and freshman Katie Fritz totaled a career-high 11 kills to lead the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Stonehill Saturday morning, extending the team's winning streak to eight.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 11-1 on the season and are 8-0 at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. It also improves Mercyhurst to 3-0 this weekend at the Laker Invitational. The team closes action at the invitational against Tiffin Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Butler's 42 assists were two shy of the season high 44 she recorded against Le Moyne Friday evening. On the season, she has totaled 415 and is averaging over 11 per game.

Eighteen of Butler's assists came in the 30-20 first-game win, as the Lakers totaled 19 kills on 36 attempts and committed just three errors for a .444 hitting percentage. Fritz totaled six kills, including four in Mercyhurst's first six points.

In game two, the Lakers received 16 more assists from Butler, five kills from freshman Erin English and four kills from senior Christine Nisbet. Stonehill kept game two close and pulled within 27-24 before freshman Sarah Harmon delivered a pair of kills to put away a 30-26 win.

Fritz and junior Lauren Kubinski helped the Lakers jump out to an early advantage in the final game with a pair of kills apiece in the game's first five points. After Ohio Valley narrowed the lead to 5-4, Mercyhurst scored 21 of the next 27 points to pull away. Senior Sara Kuntz totaled a season-high six kills in the third game alone.
