With four Lakers recording double-digit kills, the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team snapped its four-match skid and earned its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Lake Superior State Sunday afternoon.
Mercyhurst (13-5, 1-4 GLIAC) took the match by scores of 30-20, 18-30, 30-26, 30-27. While the Lakers earned their first conference win, Lake Superior State fell to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Junior Jenna Matson led the team with 14 kills, giving her six-straight matches of 10 or more kills. Matson committed just two errors and added 12 digs.
Senior Christine Nisbet turned in a solid all-around performance, totaling a season-high 12 kills, eight digs, three service aces and three block assists. Sophomore Katie Fritz added 10 kills and 14 digs and junior Lauren Kubinski tacked on 12 kills.
One day after allowing Michigan Tech to rack up 11 service aces, the Lakers limited Lake Superior State to just two. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst totaled eight aces.
Sophomore Julia Butler recorded 46 assists, giving her 10 matches of 40 or more assists this season. Freshman Kendall Ashworth chipped in 20 digs.
Sunday's win capped a five-match road trip for the Lakers, and they now return to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center for three-straight home matches, beginning with Wayne State on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
