The Mercyhurst Lakers women's soccer team opened conference play on Friday as it recorded a convincing 5-1 victory over the Northwood Timberwolves. The Lakers are now 6-1-1 this season and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while Northwood falls to 0-5 and 0-1 in the GLIAC.
After being named the GLIAC Player of the Week, sophomore Taylor Hilinski continued on her offensive rout by scoring two goals against Northwood. Junior Sarah Powell extended her scoring streak to nine games by tallying a goal and assist as well.Powell and Hilinski have now combined for 16 of the team's 28 goals.
Junior Christine Rehnert and senior Jacque Sluga also joined in on the goal scoring action by each tallying a goal and an assist.
The Lakers out shot the Timberwolves 17-6 and broke even at two cornerkicks a piece.
Junior Rebecca Heintzman (0GA) and sophomore Ashley Gammiere (1GA) split time in goal and each tallied one save.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Sunday againt Saginaw Valley State in another GLIAC matchup. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
