The Mercyhurst men's water polo team received a season-high four goals from junior Alex Perry, but Cal Lutheran, debuting its new pool, the Samuelson Aquatics Center, edged the Lakers by an 8-7 score in the opening bout of the CLU Tournament.
Mercyhurst (3-3) and Cal Lutheran (2-3) each scored three goals in the first quarter, but CLU briefly pulled away with three unanswered goals, extending the lead to 6-3.
Mercyhurst closed the gap, scoring four goals--two from Perry--in the final periods to drawn within one. The Lakers had an opportunity to tie late in the fourth quarter, but the shot was saved by Luthern keeper Quinten Beckman, who finished with 11 saves.
Freshman Alex Moggridge added two goals to the Laker cause, and junior Andrew Schonhoff added one. Goalkeeper Kyle Bogucki recorded eight saves in four quarters of action.
