Laker Volleyball Runs Through Mercyhurst Invitational with 4-0 Record

The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to five on Saturday with victories over Holy Family and W.Va. Wesleyan, capping a 4-0 weekend and a first-place finish at the Mercyhurst Invitational.

With Saturday's two victories, the Lakers improve to 8-1 on the season, already topping the previous season's win total of seven. Mercyhurst rolled past Holy Family (0-8) in the opener by scores of 30-21, 30-21, 30-26, and then ousted W.Va. Wesleyan in the invitational finale, 30-14, 30-17, 30-21.

Against Holy Family, the Lakers piled up 13 aces and took full advantage Holy Family's .043 hitting percentage. Sophomore Julia Butler led the team with 23 assists and a team-high 16 digs. Freshman Katie Fritz totaled eight kils and added 10 digs and a block assist.

After taking games one and two with ease, the Lakers found themselves leading 24-23 late in the game three. From there, Fritz totaled a pair of kills and Holy Family committed four errors to give the Lakers the match.

Game two saw the Lakers turn in their most impressive performance of the weekend. The Lakers recorded 16 aces, and junior Jenna Matson led the team with 12 kills on 26 swings while committing just one error. She also added three service aces.

Fritz posted eight kills on just 13 attempts with one error. Senior Christine Nisbet totaled six service aces.

Matson, Butler, junior Lauren Kubinski and freshman Kendall Ashworth were all named to the all-tournament team. Matson was named tournament MVP after totaled 49 kills, 13 service aces and 33 digs in four matches. Kubinski posted 38 kills and 12 total blocks on the weekend. Butler was good for 129 assists, 59 digs and eight service aces, and Ashworth posted 53 digs through four matches.
