ERIE, Pa. -
Mercyhurst scored seven runs in the first two innings to cruise to a 17-6 win over crosstown rival Gannon. Trey Bennett and David Lough combined to drive in nine Laker runs.
The two teams played one nine-inning, non-conference contest after each team had its weekend series wiped out by poor weather.
Brian Chad picked up the win with five innings of two-hit ball, striking out four.
Mercyhurst (16-11) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Jamie Walczak singled to lead off the game and Brian Sanders beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. Joe Luli had an RBI single and one run scored on each an error and a wild pitch.
In the second, David Lough singled to score two runs and when the speedy centerfielder tried to take second, a throwing error resulted in another run to make it 6-0. The Lakers made it 7-0 after two with an RBI base knock by Bennett that scored Lough.
After Lough scored on a balk in the fourth, the Lakers added another four-run inning in the fifth. Lough had another two-run single, John Blike had an RBI double, and Joe Luli drove home a run with a ground out.
Luli added an RBI single in the seventh before Bennett hit a grand slam, his fourth homer of the year, over the left field wall for a 17-1 lead.
Lough went 4-for-4 with five runs scored and four RBIs. Bennett ended up 2-for-5 and drove in five runs. Bertolini and Luli each had two hits, as well.
Gannon (5-21) had just six hits in the game, but managed to draw 10 walks, including four in the ninth. Gannon scored five runs in the final inning on just a pair of hits.
Joe Taormina took the loss, allowing seven runs in two innings.
The two teams meet again at Mercyhurst in a GLIAC doulbeheader on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
