Mercyhurst fell to Northwood University in the Sunday twinbill, 2-0 and 11-1 to in six innings in game two. The Lakers and Northwood are both now 22-21 overall and 11-9 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Game One
Strong pitching from both the Lakers and the Timberwolves held game one to low scoring defensive battle. For the Lakers, Jen Feret scattered four hits and two walks throughout seven innings while striking out five. Sheena Smith for the Timberwolves only allowed two hits and no walks in seven innings while striking out eleven.
Northwood scored in the bottom of the second with a two out single by Boscola and then a blast over the leftfield fence by Echevarria.
The two hits for the Lakers came from a single by Erin Ratajczak and one by Feret in the seventh.
Game Two
The only run of the day for the Lakers came from Kim Griffin with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth.
The Timberwolves struck big in the top of the third inning with six runs and added to their lead in the fourth and fifth to win game two 11-1.
In the third, Cooke and Slusser singled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Olson moved the runners up. Eppler reached on a fielder's choice to score Cooke. Singles by Thacker and O'Neil singled scored two more. Boscola homered to left field to score the last three runs of the inning.
A homer to leftcenter in the fourth by Eppler gave the Timberwolves a 7-0 advantage. Four more runs came in the fifth to give Northwood a 11-0 lead.
Griffin took the loss for the Lakers by allowing six hits and six runs while only striking out one in the 2.2 innings. Brittany Strier came in for relief for 2.1 innings and allowed five hits and five runs while striking out five.
Mercyhurst will travel to Edinboro University on Tuesday, May 1 for a non-conference doubleheader slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
