Mercyhurst used a pair of big fourth innings to take a pair of games from crosstown rival Gannon, winning 9-3 and 8-1. The Lakers scored six in the fourth in game one, then dropped a five-spot in game two's fourth at-bat.
Game One
A two-run single by Adam Gray and a pair of bases loaded walks led to a five run fourth inning as Mercyhurst cruised 9-3.
The Lakers had jumped out to ahead 1-0 on a ground out by Jeff Stoll that scored Trey Bennett.
In the fourth, the Lakers scored six runs on just a pair of hits. Gannon five batters in the frame, including four in succession at one point. Tim Echan walked with one out, then Sean Weyant followed with a double and Gray singled them both home. Dan Bertolini, Trey Bennett, Jamie Walczak, and David Lough all drew walks after that with the final two resulting in runs for a 6-0 lead. Mercyhurst scored its final run in the inning on a sac fly by Stoll.
Mercyhurst scored nine runs on just six hits, but were aided by 12 walks and four Gannon errors.
Eric Drobotij picked up the win allowing just a three-run homer by Brad Kozak. He struck out eight and allowed just six hits. John Morris pitched a scoreless seventh.
Bennett had two hits for Mercyhurst, but Walczak and Lough each walked three times. Stoll and Gray each drove in two.
Matt Amory took the loss. He allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings. He struck out one and walked eight.
Game Two
Brian Espersen held Gannon to just four hits over 5.2 innings as Mercyhurst picked up the sweep with an 8-1 win.
Mercyhurst went ahead 2-0 in the first inning. An RBI double by David Lough scored Bennett, then Lough came home on a Luli single.
Joe Luli's RBI single in the third that scored David Lough made it 3-0 before the Lakers added five more in the fourth on only four hits. A Jamie Walczak double scored Dan Bertolini. Walczak scored on a wild pitch, Lough walked and came home on Jeff Stoll's single through the left side. Josh Schmidt hit a two-run single to score both Stoll and Joe Luli, who had walked.
Gannon got its lone run in the sixth on a run scoring single by Jonathan Dziomba.
John Morris finished the sixth for Espersen, who improved to 4-2 with the win, before Ryan Schreiber tossed a scoreless seventh.
Nick Licskai fell to 1-8 on the year. He allowed all eight runs on eight hits and six walks. He also threw five wild pitches.
David Lough went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a double and two walks. Luli also went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair. Schmidt knocked in two runners as well.
Dziomba had two of Gannon's five hits.
Mercyhurst scored 17 runs on just 15 hits over the two games, but drew 18 walks.
Mercyhurst, who has won four in a row, improved to 24-15 overall and 10-8 in the GLIAC. Gannon falls to 5-35 and 1-19.
The Lakers stay on the road for a four-game GLIAC series at Northwood on Saturday and Sunday.
