The Mercyhurst women's water polo team completed its regular season by splitting a pair of conference matches this weekend. The Lakers lost to Grove City 7-4 Friday night before defeating Washington and Jefferson 8-4 Saturday.
In the first game, Mercyhurst was held to just one goal during the second and third periods as the Lakers fell behind 6-2 after three. Although Mercyhurst outscored Grove City 2-1 in the final period, it was not enough.
Carrie Willison and Christine Somera accounted for all of Mercyhurst's goals, scoring two each. Willison also had two assists, while Somera had six drawn ejections. As a team, Mercyhurst forced 18 steals. Gina Mieras made eight saves in goal and added two steals.
In game two, Mercyhurst smothered Washington and Jefferson defensively, holding the Presidents to only two goals through three periods. Somera had five goals and Willison three to lead the Lakers. The team added 19 steals against Washington and Jefferson, while Mieras had eight saves, two assists and a steal from the goalie position.
Mercyhurst moves to 11-12 on the year and finishes 3-4 in the CWPA. The Lakes will compete in the Western Division Championships April 21-22 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
