Final Stats
Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst defeated Gannon University in doubleheader with a total team effort on Wednesday. The Lakers (14-13 overall, 4-2 in the GLIAC) got long balls from Megan Houston in the first game and Jessica McNurlen and Melissa Rizzo in the game two. In addition, Jen Feret and Kim Griffin provided solid pitching efforts.
Game One
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, then added two more in the second to pick up the 4-1 win.
Jen Feret stroked an RBI double in the first, then scored the Lakers' second run of the frame on a bases loaded walk to Melissa Rizzo.
In the bottom of the second, Houston hit a line drive over the leftfield fence for a 4-0 Laker lead. Erin Ratajczak, who reached on a bunt single, also scored on Houston's fourth homer of the year.
The Golden Knights (20-10 overall, 2-4 in the GLIAC) did not answer until the top of the sixth when an Ann Waters base hit scored Steph Christ to make it 4-1. Feret managed to pitch out of the jam by getting Hannah Koenig to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Feret picked up the win, allowing seven hits, three walks, and striking out eight.
Game Two
Mercyhurst managed just a pair of hits in the second game, but the Lakers maded the most of them with solo homers from Jessica McNurlen and Melissa Rizzo to pick up a 2-1 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.
The Golden Knights scored their only run in the first inning, when a Casee Piquet single knocked home Carol Kienzl.
Mercyhurst tied the game in the fourth with McNurlen's third home run, and Melissa Rizzo's shot the next inning proved to be the game-winner.
Kim Griffin dominated on the mound and scattered four hits and three walks, allowing just an unearned run.
The Lakers, winners of four straight, go on the road this weekend to face Saginaw Valley on April 14th and Lake Superior State on April 15th for four conference games.
