The Mercyhurst Lakers jumped out to an early 17-8 lead but could not hold on as Lake Superior State came back for an 87-76 victory Saturday afternoon. Mercyhurst drops to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in the GLIAC. Lake Superior earns its first conference win, improving to 1-3 in the GLIAC and 3-5 overall.
Lake Superior got on the scoreboard first with a jumper from Danielle Makins, but Mercyhurst continued its trend of coming out strong, getting nine points from Samantha Loadman, and took a 17-6 lead. Lake Superior battled back to take a 28-25 lead with 8:29 remaining and held onto the lead for the remainder of the period, posting a 46-35 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Mercyhurst battled back to within one at the 14-minute mark and regained the lead on a Loadman three-pointer. Lake Superior answered with a three-pointer on its next possession, extended the lead to 10 points by the 10-minute mark and never led by less than seven the remainder of the game.
Lake Superior shot 53 percent from the field, while Mercyhurst ended at 47 percent. The long ball was critical throughout as Lake Superior made 6-of-9 in the first half and 11-of-20 for the game, while Mercyhurst was 4-of-12 in the opening period and 6-of-16 in the contest.
Amy Achesinski the Lakers with 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Loadman and Stephanie Prischak also contributed offensively with 14 points apiece.
Mercyhurst will return to the MAC to prepare for a match-up with Tiffin on Saturday, December 15th. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
