No. 6/5 Mercyhurst scored four goals on 11 shots in the first period and never looked back as the Lakers defeated the No. 8-ranked Dartmouth Big Green, 7-0, Saturday afternoon. The win is the third straight for MC in the series, but DC still holds a 5-3-1 advantage. Mercyhurst improved to 14-3-2 overall while Dartmouth dropped to 9-3-1.
The Lakers' four first-period tallies all came four minutes apart. Sophomore forward Meghan Agosta started things off with two goals, at the 8:44 and 9:11 mark, respectively, both unassisted. Freshman Geena Prough scored her third goal of the season. The lamp-lighter was assisted by Sherilyn Fraser and Ashley Cockell. Freshman Jesse Scanzano finished the opening period scoring with a tally at 12:58. Ironically, Mercyhurst was outshot that period, 15-11.
Freshman Vicki Bendus began where the Lakers left off in the second period on a goal assisted by Cassea Schols and Valerie Chouinard. Chouinard would record the game's only power-play goal at the 16:49 mark, helped by Natalie Payne and Agosta.
Freshman Cheyenne Bojeski scored her first collegiate goal two minutes into the third period, assisted by Chouinard and Jackie Jarrell, to finish the scoring.
The shots were even at 31 all. Hosier stopped all 31 for her 19th career shutout, just five behind career leader, Desi Clark. With the win, senior Laura Hosier ties Clark for career victories, with 63. Dartmouth's Carli Clemis started in goal and stopped 18 of 24 shots in 40 minutes. Mariel Lacina allowed one goal on seven shots in 20 minutes of action.
Mercyhurst was 1-for-6 on the power play while the Big Green was 0-for-5.
Agosta notched her seventh game-winning goal of the season, which leads the team. Chouinard's power-play tally was her fifth this season, tied for Agosta for team lead.
The teams will conclude the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
